The name C V Kunhiraman is a symbol of courage and transformation in the history of Malayalam journalism, the history of Kerala’s renaissance and in Malayalam prose. CV is also the father of Kerala Kaumudi. Today is the 150th birth anniversary of C V Kunhiraman. The heroic journey of CV in any field was taken out after absorbing the light of inspiration from Sree Narayana Guru, who glistened as the sun of Renaissance revolution in the dark ages of racial inequalities and the underlying social anomalies.
The renaissance activities that took place under the leadership of Gurudeva can also be called the story of the opposition, resistance, struggles and resurrection of the oppressed backward people. In leading such activities, Dr CV with Palpu and Kumaranasan were there. Along with that there was also the main stream newspaper Kerala Kaumudi, of which CV was the editor-in-chief. That is the unquenchable light we have preserved in letters through these years.
CV Kunhiraman, the father of modern Malayalam prose literature, discovered the power and beauty of pure Malayalam not only in the language of newspapers but also in the language of literature.
While being at the forefront of the Satyagraha and the subsequent temple entry proclamation, CV’s language and words bore the strength and fervor of the struggle for the backward class.
When the idea of 'Sujananandini', started by Paravur Keshavanasan for the protection of the backward classes, including the Ezhavas, came to a halt in 1906, the idea of a newspaper to discuss backward community issues gained momentum and it was CV who took the initiative, heeding to the instruction of Sree Narayana Gurudeva, to start a newspaper. CV was a government official when he started 'Kerala Kaumudi' in 1911. Therefore used the name of poet Mulur’s name in the place of editor. However, CV did all the editing work, including the editorial.
In the history of Malayalam Journalism, it was Kunhiraman who introduced interview formats in newspapers. His conversation with Sree Narayana Guru is famous. CV used the word 'debate', not 'dialogue'. The journalist in CV looked into the meaning of Guru's message - 'One caste, one religion, one God'. The editorial genius in him was ready to publish in detail the answer given by the Guru to his question how one religion philosophy could be right. The main beneficiary was the people as the message could be conveyed to them without any ambiguity or else the message could have been misunderstood or misinterpreted.
Behind all this was CV's unwavering devotion to the Guru and his firm belief in the Gurudarshan.
CV is a founder of newpaper, journalist, renaissance hero, lawyer, litterateur, and community leader who has left an indelible imprint on time. On the occasion of Kunhiraman's 150th birth anniversary, Kerala society has come through a long way in history. What is unfortunate is new forms of casteiest thinking and caste discrimination have reared its ugly head in all walks of life, including in the political and professional spheres. For Kerala Kaumudi, its daily coming out each day is a fight for social justice, kick-started by CV and continued by its founding editor K Sukumaran.
As we continue our courageous and long journey through path shown by the great doyen C V Kunhiraman, we respectfully and proudly rededicate ourselves to our readers.
