KOTTAYAM: UDF camp is witnessing marathon talks and plot to hatch political moves to bring NCP leader Mani C Kappan to UDF fold. Kappan who is no longer interested to continue in LDF has also not revealed his opinion on defecting to the right front. The prominent leaders of A and I factions in Congress and Joseph group of Kerala Congress have conducted several rounds of talks with enraged Kappan. Sources say that UDF has given him assurance over the Pala seat. Congress is of the opinion that if NCP is not willing to join, let Kappan join with UDF.
The Kerala yatra led by the opposition leader will reach Kottayam within few days. The day when he reaches Kottayam, Kappan is expected to join the right front. Sources close to Kappan also hints at exit from LDF. Chennithala’s yatra will reach Kottayam on 14th. Whereas the CPM state secretariat still holds the view that Kappan who won from Pala seat last time, should be retained in the front. Pala seat which is currently held by P J Joseph will be given to Kappan. Congress feel that UDF’s traditional votes and with Kappan’s influence in the area, Pala could be brought back to UDF. Congress also thinks that Joseph’s support and Christian votes will have a crucial impact on Congress’s rise in the region.
Kappan has even postponed the development procession hinting at front change. Kappan has reached Delhi to inform his stand to Sharad Pawar and his leadership. Kappan might go to UDF if Sharad Pawar stands with him. If he doesn’t support Kappan, then it might lead to a split in NCP. Sources indicate that there are more chances for a split. But NCP’s strength will not get reduced, even if Kappan leaves the party as left votes constitute the party’s base in Kerala.
NCP as a party is not interested to leave LDF. Kappan is of the opinion that even if any other seat is received instead of Pala, then also it might lead to other issues in LDF. Kappan also fears if CPM will backstab him and it is better to join UDF camp rather than getting defeated. Whereas, in LDF talks between CPM and NCP is ongoing.
