THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state cabinet has decided to dismiss the policemen who are involved in custodial death cases without any trial. The crucial step was taken after accepting the findings and recommendations of Retired Justice Narayanakuruppu who investigated the Nedumkandam custodial death case. Accordingly, in the first phase, the six policemen, the accused in the case related to the custodial death of Rajkumar, will be dismissed from service. This is in accordance with the recommendation of the Commission under Article 311 (2) of the Constitution.

The proposal to dismiss the then SI Sabu, ASI Roy, driver Nias and civil police officers Jibin, Rejimon and Home Guard James at the Nedumkandam police station will be handed over to the police headquarters. Dismissal proceedings usually take place if the police officers involved in custodial death cases are found guilty at trial.

Rajkumar died on July 21, 2019, in Idukki Peermede sub-jail. The Justice Narayanakuruppu Commission had found that Rajkumar had been brutally beaten by police for 72 consecutive hours. The first postmortem stated that he had died of pneumonia. The Judicial Commission later recovered the body and the second post-mortem revealed that brutal police brutality had taken place.
