THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the onslaught of summer heat, power consumption in the state is increasing. Last day alone 81 million units of electricity were consumed. The power consumption reached all-time high in the state on 2019 May 23, when the Lok Sabha polls were going on. On that day 88.34 million units of electricity were consumed. But against the usual pattern, the rise in consumption in the month of February alone has made the KSEB authorities clueless.

The power consumption is witnessing surge at night time. The reason for this surge is the rampant usage of air conditioners to get out of the hike in temperature at night. With the hike in power consumption, power generation has also increased. The power generation at Moolamatton in Idukki is at an all-time high. On Saturday alone, 14.28 million units of power were generated.

The higher demand for power in Kerala is met by importing additional units of power from outside the state. On Saturday alone, Kerala bought 53.8 million units of power from the central grid. With the declaration of polls, it is expected that power consumption will again increase further. KSEB has also said that as the Idukki dam have enough water and due to the availability of power from the central grid, there is no power deficit in the state.
