THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kummanam Rajashekaran may be shifted from Nemom. A decision will be taken after looking at the congress candidate contesting here. V Sivankutty is the CPM’s candidate. A tight fight will be witnessed if a strong candidate like K Muraleedharan contests from here. The BJP is trying to retain Nemon constituency, which opened its first party account in the state, at any cost. The BJP had earlier decided to field Kummanam instead of O Rajagopal. The party had directed Kummanam to focus in the constituency.
Nemom is one of the BJP's strongholds in the state. In the last Lok Sabha and local body elections, the party had topped the list in terms of vote share, surpassing the Congress and the CPM. The organizational structure of Congress in Nemom is a complete failure. The majority of former Congressmen are now in the BJP. So even if a strong contestant is fielded here, it is difficult for them to win. Fielding a strong candidate like Muraleedhran will only benefit the BJP. It is estimated that by fielding a strong candidate, the anti-BJP votes which the CPM gets will be divided and this will help the BJP.
If shifted from Nemom, Kummanam may contest in Vattiyoorkavu. He contested the assembly elections in 2016 and the by-elections in 2019 from Vattiyoorkavu. The BJP was able to gain a large number of votes but could not capture the constituency. As V K Prashant MLA is so popular, the BJP will not be able to make gains here easily as in previous years.
