NEW DELHI: AICTE has said that Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will continue as mandatory subjects for engineering courses, but it is not mandatory that students should have studied these subjects at the 12th standard level. The apex body of technical education has issued these guidelines in the approval handbook published for the academic year 2021-22.

For engineering subjects like mechanical engineering Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will continue as mandatory subjects. However, those students who are specialising in Textile Engineering, Agriculture and Biotechnology will be provided with an additional option.

Until now, those who have studied Mathematics and Physics along with the subjects of Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical or Vocational courses were eligible to apply for B.E and B.tech courses.

The handbook also says that AICTE will launch a bridge course for those students who have not studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics but are eligible to study for AICTE approved engineering and technical courses.
