THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vattiyoorkavu is one of the most important assembly constituencies in Kerala that always get attention. Vattiyoorka witnessing a triangular contest will once again be a hotly contested match. When K Muraleedharan chose Vadakara for Lok Sabha, V K Prashanth who carried the image of Mayor Bro, captured the constituency from the Congress.
Vattiyoorkavu is a very influential constituency for Hindus especially the Nair community. Therefore, the BJP as well has good hope in Vattiyoorkavu. Although the Congress was leading in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP surpassed the LDF and come second. However, the situation changed in the local body polls. The LDF topped highlighting the development works started by Prashanth. The LDF garnered 37628 votes, UDF 27191 and NDA 34780 votes.
This time too the aim of the LDF is to gain votes through Prashanth’s popularity. The flaws in the organizational system which was a setback in the previous elections, changed with the candidature of Prashanth. With the return of the leaked votes from the CPM, the Front also got the support of various sections.
The congress fielded youth congress state secretary Veena S Nair eyeing Nair votes. Veena's candidature is an answer to LDF's plan of highlighting youth representation through Prashanth.
The BJP fielded district president V V Rajesh to contest in the constituency where Kummanam Rajasekharan came second in the last elections. In 2014, O Rajagopal polled 43,589 votes, while in 2019 Kummanam raised it to 50,709.
Although majority is the Nair community, Vattiyoorkavu is a constituency that has a decisive influence on the Ezhavas and Dalit communities. The electorate in the last election was 1,95,601. About 25 per cent of them are Christians and Muslims.
