The agreement reached between India and Pakistan on February 25 to implement the ceasefire came as a shock to many. China did not expect that at all. This is not good news for the Western powers either. This is because for years, some established centers have been trying to cash in on the animosity between India and Pakistan. Till date, no one has been interested in this except the peace-loving people of both countries. That is what has changed now. There are indications that the UAE's mediation efforts played a key role behind the ceasefire agreement.

The UAE-led talks between the two countries began months before the crucial announcement. The day after the ceasefire was announced, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Syed visited India and met Foreign Minister Jayashankar. Earlier in November, Jayasankar had visited the UAE to hold talks with the authorities. In December, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Masood Qureshi also visited the UAE. The role of the UAE in such discussions has now been revealed. Two weeks before the ceasefire was announced, the UAE government was in contact with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Meanwhile, permission given by India to Imran Khan to fly to Sri Lanka via Indian airspace was seen by many as a sign of improving relations. For the first time since 2019, India has allowed airspace for Pakistani aircraft.

What is usually seen after the announcement of a decision between the rulers of India and Pakistan to make peace is the subversion of that move. It is the Pakistani military leadership that has turned anti-India sentiment into something that could be ‘sold off’ at home and abroad. The military leadership in Pakistan will seek the help of China and the United States, and the latter may be tempted to do so, because India is a great power. China does not want to see India grow, which could lead to the depletion of its trade resources. The US, which prioritizes trade interests, also holds the concerns that India's good relations with it could be jeopardized if a compromise with Pakistan is reached. Many people want India and Pakistan to remain hostile to each other, but the UAE does not have such interests, it is a country that wants the welfare of India and Pakistan… And, the sincerity of the UAE rulers…no one can question that.
