MANJESHWAR: A seven-member gang opened fire at policemen who tried to nab them at Kolavayal in Kasargod district. Manjeshwar SI Balakrishnan got injured when the gang members threw beer bottles at him. Three of the gang members, who entered Karnataka, were later arrested by the Karnataka police. Two people, including mafia boss Rahim, escaped. The shocking events took place on Thursday night and yesterday morning.
Crime Squad led by DySP PP Sadanandan and Kumbala-Manjeshwaram police started an inspection after receiving information that a gang that created an atmosphere of terror in Uppala Hidayath Nagar on Thursday evening were seen driving around in a car in Miyapadavu. There were more than 25 policemen in four jeeps and a bus. Although the car of the gang was initially spotted by the police in Miyappadavu, they were unable to nab the gang members. Later, the gang was spotted near Kolavayal.
The gangmembers opened fire at the police when the police seized a Swift car without a number plate. It was later learnt that the car belonged to the gang. After the gang fled to Karnataka, Manjeshwar police sought the help of Sulya, Vitla and Puthur stations in Karnataka.
Although the gang members opened fire at the Vitla police as well, three of them were arrested by the police. However, the Vitla police is yet to hand over the three to the Kerala police.
