THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government is planning to distribute the Vishu kits from today amidst the war of words between the ruling and the opposition. Even if a special order is issued, ration dealers have made it clear that they will not be able to open shops on April 1 and 2nd, which are holidays.
The government had earlier decided to give April’s kit in March end. The election commission sought an explanation from the government after the opposition filed a complaint alleging that rice is distributed earlier aiming votes and asked to distribute from 1st onwards. April 1 and 2 are holidays. However, the food department were of the view that the ration shops could be opened only by a special order.
The government decided to distribute the kit earlier as the merchants took a strict stand that shops will not be opened on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
The government is planning to deliver the kit to as many as possible before April 5. The election commission just sought an explanation but had not asked to stop the distribution. The government believes that the distribution would not be disrupted as the Vishu kits have already been delivered to many shops.
The government will file a plea in the high court against the election commission blocking the distribution of special rice. The distribution of special rice to non-priority sections will start tomorrow if the high court gives a favorable verdict. The election commission stayed the distribution of rice citing violations of code of conduct.
