CHANGANASSERY: The Archdiocese of Changanassery has called on the faithful to vote for those who stand for religious freedom and minority rights. Those who are committed to upholding the Constitution, democratic values, minority rights and religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution should be elected. Archbishop Joseph Perunthottam, Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Changanassery, appealed to the faithful to cast their votes in the Assembly elections in good faith.
The people's representatives must be those who stand and work for the good of the country and the people. Those who are committed to upholding the country's constitution, democratic values, minority rights, and the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution must be elected. They should not be complicit in corruption and violence. They must be working for the public good and not for their own gain.
Those who strive to prevent any harm to religious harmony must come to the political leadership. Rulers are supposed to be the architects of a nation of justice and fairness. They must be prepared to serve the people impartially.
The democracy of the country is literally realized when every citizen exercises his or her right to vote freely and responsibly to elect the best representatives of the people. The note, therefore, urges that the vote be cast in accordance with the true Christian conscience in good faith, without succumbing to anyone's pressure tactics, selfish motives or ill effects.
All authority comes from God. Political power is given to lead the nation in goodness, justice and righteousness. It should not be a style of dictatorship and dictatorship. We can also pray for better governance across the country through elections where democracy is protected. Wishing everyone the blessings of Easter, says the note.
