NEW DELHI: N V Ramana will be appointed as the 48th CJI of India. President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to the order appointing him. Incumbent CJI, S A Bobde will retire on coming 23rd.

Justice Ramana is set to take the oath of office of CJI on April 24. He will be the 48th CJI. He was appointed as judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014, and will be retiring on August 26, 2022.

Earlier, the Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, in consonance with the existing Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) sought the name of the next CJI from the incumbent CJI SA Bobde.

Justice Ramana hails from the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. He was enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983, and started practice in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

He was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. He functioned as Acting Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013, to May 20, 2013. From there, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court w.e.f. 02.09.2013. He was elevated as a Judge, Supreme Court of India w.e.f. 17.02.2014.
