KOCHI: The Kerala High Court asked the Central Election Commission (CEC) to cite the reasons for postponing the Rajya Sabha elections. They have been directed to inform in writing. The election commission assured the high court that it will issue an election notification before the retirement of Rajya Sabha members.
The term of three Rajya Sabha members from Kerala ends on April 21. It was decided earlier to conduct election before this. However, this date was later withdrawn. It was withdrawn following the recommendation of the union law department. The assembly secretary and CPM leader S Sarma approached the Kerala High Court against this. In this plea, the election commission informed the court that the notification will be issued before the term of the Rajya Sabha members end.
The assembly secretary argued in court that there was no reason to postpone the election from the date decided and it is an attempt to deny the chance for the present assembly members to vote. After hearing this argument, the court directed to inform in writing why the date fixed earlier was changed. The court will hear the case in detail the day after tomorrow.
