Kochi: The high court opined that the government should prepare a plan to help and support single mothers raising their children. A division bench, comprising Justices Justice Mohammad Mushtaq and Justice Dr Kauser Edappagath passed the order while considering the petition of the woman who handed over her child to the Child Welfare committee following the breakdown of her live-in relationship.

The Division Bench said that despite the fact that Kerala is 100 percent literate, we have a demeaning attitude towards women and mothers who have to raise their children alone do not get financial or social support. Such mothers face severe psychological challenges. They are forced to believe that they are doomed to be isolated for the wrong they have done. They find it very difficult to get support or help from the community. The plaintiff in this case is also a person who has faced severe challenges from the community. The petitioner had to hand over the child to the Child Welfare Committee as she could not raise the child alone. Like any mother, she too loved her baby. But circumstances in the community did not allow her to continue looking after the baby. The plaintiff thought that she could not live without male support. If a woman feels that she is nothing without the support of a man, it is a failure of this system. Motherhood is the source of human power in the universe. It is up to the government to ensure the rule of law supports her struggles for survival. That confidence should be her personality and the respect she deserves. - The High Court said.
