THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With a month left for the end of summer, Kerala has received record rainfall this year. This also happens to be the year that received the highest summer rainfall in the last 10 years. From March 1 to yesterday, the state received 131.6 mm of rainfall as against the expected 91.4 mm. This is 44 percent higher than the average. While the state received 7 percent extra rainfall in 2020, the rainfall was 57 percent less in 2019. If the current situation continues, this time the summer rainfall will be a record. Pathanamthitta district received the highest rainfall (112% more) and Ernakulam district received 104% more rainfall. There is no shortage of rain in any district.

Other districts such Kasargod (53), Wayanad (50), Kottayam (68), Thiruvananthapuram (6) and Kozhikode (36) received extra rainfall. The increase in summer rainfall is due to the increase in the strength of the east wind, increased humidity and inactivation of the La Nina phenomenon. This is likely to continue. Low pressure along the coast of Bengal also helped. The state is likely to receive more rain in May. Strong winds will continue in the eastern hills.
