With the onset of the second wave of Covid, the country as a whole is in a state of panic. The country needs to successfully overcome this extraordinary ordeal phase. Although it is easy to criticize the government's actions blindly, there should be positive suggestions and support from the opposition on how to overcome the current crisis. Governments also have a responsibility to make appropriate decisions based on all practical suggestions.
As the number of Covid patients exceeds two lakh per day, the panic among the people will be high. Meanwhile, the failure of vaccinations due to shortage of medicines, will lead to further panic even as vaccination is considered to be a major part of preventive measures. Such a situation exists in many states. There are currently only two companies producing the vaccine in the country. No matter how hard you try, the stock will not last long enough. Given that only 8% of the population has been vaccinated, one has only to wonder how long it will take to bring things to a satisfactory level.
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has come out with some valuable suggestions on how to deal with Covid's second onset. Manmohan Singh's appearance was remarkable. He does not complain about the inadequacy of government action, but focuses on how to improve the situation. The most important of these is the measures to be taken to combat the vaccine shortage.
The former Prime Minister's suggestion that more pharmaceutical companies should be licensed to manufacture Covid vaccine should be considered in the context of increasing pressure on the Centre for the vaccine from the states as a whole. His opinion is that the production of the vaccine should be maximized by issuing compulsory licenses if necessary. Many reputed pharmaceutical companies are located here so the required vaccine can only be produced here. The former Prime Minister's view that states should be empowered to administer and prioritize vaccine also deserves consideration. Everything needs to be under central supervision. States should be allowed to determine vaccine priority. Priority should be given to those who interact more closely with the community. Now the age is considered.
In addition to increasing vaccine production, other facilities related to Covid treatment need to be increased. There should be no shortage of hospital beds, ventilators, oxygen or medicines. The increasing number of patients has become a challenge for all states. It is clear that the situation can only be tackled only through collective efforts.
