THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state is well prepared for floods as precuationary measure with the state receiving heavy rains and hurricanes ahead of the monsoon. Authorities say people need not be afraid of floods.

After the catastrophic floods of 2018, Malayalees are concerned about rain. The fear of floods has not changed. The Disaster Management Authority, KSEB and the water management system are on high alert before the monsoon to strengthen the precautionary measures.

The water level in the dams has not risen significantly. Idukki, the largest dam, has a water content of 32.6%. The water level is 2333 feet. It can store up to 2400 feet. The water level in Edamalayar, another large dam, is 29.9 per cent. The situation is similar in Kaki, Sholayar and Banasura Sagar. Of the large and medium reservoirs, only Ponmudi (79.61%), Erattayar (70%) and Lower Periyar (60%) have above 50% water. At the same time, according to the protocol for keeping the water level safe, water is released lightly in Malankara, Kallada, Moolathara, Kuttiyadi, Shiruvani, Bhoothankett, Neyyar, Karappuzha, Peechi, Malampuzha, Kanjirapuzha and Maniyar. Yellow alert is declared in these areas.
