KOCHI: V D Satheesan, who was chosen as the opposition leader has said that he accepts the challenge to bring UDF back to power. “It is almost impossible to function as a traditional opposition. Will initiate new changes, after consulting with my colleagues,” he said.

“Groups have no relevance over the issue of bringing back UDF. The functioning of groups should never affect the merit of any persons. I have the full conviction that the post of opposition leader is not a floral crown. The first priority of UDF is to uproot communalism from Kerala. The majority of the people in the state believe in secularism. I will take a strong stand against both majority and minority appeasement,” Satheesan said.

“There should be a generational change in all sectors. I don’t think that politics is just about winning elections. I will try to accommodate everybody’s interests. For me Chennithala is like an elder brother,” he told the media.

“We will function as a pro-people opposition and will point out every lapse and faults from the government’s side. Will not blindly oppose everything. Will support the government if it does something right. Whereas we will strongly oppose the wrong things inside and outside the assembly,” he added.

“The current practise is not like that of Karunakaran’s. This change has occurred every time. The current changes have occurred to accommodate the changing demands of the time. Along with this, the interests of the democratic society in Kerala will also be considered. The beauty of democracy is strong opposition. The duty of the opposition is to prevent the ruling government from resorting to autocracy,” he said.
