The new Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan should start working with the conviction that Ramesh Chennithala was a success as an Opposition leader. The new Leader of the Opposition has a long way to go beyond just pointing out and correcting the mistakes of the government. Ramesh Chennithala raised many issues against the previous Pinarayi government and they achieved the goals. But the Congress did not get the benefit of it. This is because the CPM government was ready to correct the mistakes they were convinced of. If it had been earlier, the CPM would not have been prepared to do so. This is a new experience for people. Whoever rules will have flaws. They become obsolete when they are not ready to correct it.

The Congress party did not bother to correct their mistakes and tried to convince the people by mere talks. Gone are the days when it was worth saying that the High Command would decide the Chief Minister if the Congress won. It is high time that the Leader of the Opposition moved away from the traditional style in even evaluating the actions of the government. There is not even need for much talk when presenting problems with evidence based on technicalities. Criticizing the government for each and every thing is not the right way to go. More important than criticism is the credibility of the opposition leader. We think that will not happen to Satheesan.

An example of this is the strong stand taken by Satheesan on lottery issue. Who does not know that the lottery kings are the ‘Kubera’ forces who can buy any leader. But Satheesan did not waver. VD wanted to justify the fact that if out-of-state lotteries are sold in the state, they will eat away the money of the common man and he could prove his credibility vis-à-vis Kerala's welfare and future. Lastly, even the courts agreed with the stand that out-of-state lotteries should not be allowed in Kerala. It was also an incident that showed that he had the mental strength and credibility to lead Kerala in the future.
Satheesan has many challenges ahead of him. People will first be curious to see how Satheesan overcomes the challenge of being opposite to the most powerful Pinarayi Vijayan.

No opposition leader can win without the internal support of his own party. No protest is likely to succeed if only the Leader of the Opposition wishes for it. It needs party workers’ support. They need to have faith in the leader if they have to forget everything and stand with the party. That was what Congress lacked in recent times. Many of the qualities that V D Satheesan has like skill, maturity, presentation excellence, modesty and lack of arrogance is enough to regain that faith. Satheesan has proved. Therefore, a bright future awaits Satheesan as the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala. We wish that may Satheesan be able to rise to the expectations of the people.
