THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With V D Satheesan becoming the leader of the opposition the group equations in Congress will again witness change. With Satheeshan’s ascendance to the top post in opposition, the era of Chennithala and Oomen Chandy in Congress politics is going to end. If high command follows the same methodology in selecting the KPCC chief as in the case of the leader of opposition then it is obvious that the group commitments will not be fulfilled.

As the moves made for the leader of the opposition ended in total failure, groups have lost their enthusiasm. If Chennithala has become the opposition leader, then the KPCC chief may also be appointed based on group interests.

A group had intended to seize the KPCC chief’s post by supporting Ramesh Chennithala. This understanding was strong among the prominent leaders of both groups. But as all young MLAs supported generation change all group politics ended in vain. The group leaders in the party are disappointed over the unexpected political move of the young MLAs. Group managers are also concerned that if they allow such moves then they may also lose control over the party.

Oommen Chandy is aggrieved over the sudden U-turn of party leaders in withdrawing their support to Ramesh Chennithala during the high command’s meeting despite giving due directions to them before the meeting. This is the first time the ‘A’ group is witnessing such a crisis, which is known for its understanding and unity. Thus ‘A’ group has got scattered into three factions. As all political moves have ended in a disaster, more leaders will leave the ‘I’ group. Group leaders like KC Venugopal and K Sudhakaran adopting different stands have put the group in further trouble.

Sources say that the groups may not initiate calculated political moves in the selection of KPCC chief, due to their failure in the opposition leader’s case. This might give the high command more autonomy in making a final decision.

The Ashok Chavan committee which is studying the poll defeat in Kerala will seek the leaders' opinion on the KPCC chief's post by the end of this week. If group interests are not considered then K Sudhakaran will become the party chief. High command is also observing the subsequent moves of Chennithala and Oommen Chandy.
