THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Safety Authority will take over the reins of the dams from June 1. The system came into being after the massive floods of 2018. With the Safety Authority taking over the reins, the water level will be assessed every day and precautionary measures will be taken at the dams and river banks. Warnings will be issued in case of any emergencies. Those living along the coast will be instructed to evacuate.

The Safety Authority will be supervised by the State Disaster Management Authority. In each district, there is a team led by the Collector as the Dam Safety Committee. An Emergency Action Plan has been prepared for each of the 22 major dams under the control of KSEB.

The water level will be checked daily from June 1. The levels to which water from each river rises at each area when water is released from the dams have been estimated. This is known as the rule curve. This may vary depending on the amount of rainfall. The limit for issuing blue, orange, and red alerts is based on the rule curve. It will be forwarded to the Collector's Committee before June 1.

If the water level has to be released every day, the rate will be announced. The dam should not be opened between 6 pm and 6 am.

Special control system for large dams such as Idukki, Cheruthoni, Kakki, Anathodu, and Banasura Sagar. The storage capacity of these has been maintained at 35 percent.
