NEW DELHI: Congress high command considers the name of Roji M John along with K Sudhakaran for the post of KPCC president. Roji M John figured in the list of possible chiefs of KPCC due to the special interest of Rahul Gandhi. Roji is also the first person to become the president of NSU, the student’s organisation of Congress since Rahul Gandhi implemented elections for the first time.

It is learnt that Congress is hoping to attract the Christian communities in the state back to the Congress fold through this move. Since Oommen Chandy had stepped down from the leadership, no popular leader has come to the helm of KPCC. In such a situation, the odds for Roji is high.

The names of senior leaders like K Sudhakaran, Kodikunnil Suresh, K Muraleedharan and PT Thomas has come up before the Ashok Chavan committee which was appointed by the high command to study the party’s poll debacle in the state. When high command tilted towards K Sudhakaranm issued rammed up in KPCC. The A and I groups have no interests in Sudhakaran or Kodikunnil.

As part of generation change, the party has also considered P C Vishnunath’s name to the top post but he failed to garner the support of ‘A’ group. This was due to the group’s resentment towards the high command as it didn’t consider its recommendations while appointing the opposition leader. It could be also considered as the sweet revenge of senior leaders in the group to the youth leaders in the party who supported V D Sateeshan to the opposition leader’s post overriding the group’s direction to support Chennithala.

With this, the high command has decided to support Roji, who also have the support of Rahul Gandhi. Roji is one of the leaders in the party leadership who supported V D Sateeshan to the opposition leader’s post. AICC has also earlier decided to appoint K Sudhakaran as the chief of KPCC. The Kerala leaders in high command have also supported this. However, the announcement was postponed after senior leaders Ramesh Chennithala, Oommen Chandy and Mullappally Ramachandran remained silent, expressing dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Leader of the Opposition was elected.
