KANNUR: It is not for nothing that the new generation says that Malayalees are great. When a need arises, the state will join hands to help the needy. Malayalees have crowdfunded the entire amount of Rs. 18 crore required for the medicine of a child named Mohammad hailing from Mattool who was seeking treatment for a rare genetic disease.
Mohammed's family said they had received the full amount and thanked all the people of Kerala. Mattool panchayat president Farisha officially informed that the entire amount for the medicine has been received.
Mohammed suffered from a genetic disorder called spinal muscular atrophy. Muhammad's sister, Afra, had the same disease. Afra suffered from a lack of adequate treatment at a young age. Afra had begged that her brother should not be like her. It is hoped that Mohammed will be able to slowly return to normal life with a single dose of injection brought in from abroad.
Zolgensma, a valuable drug, should be injected before the age of two. One-and-a-half-year-old Mohammed is expected to survive after this injection. The money was crowdfunded in just six days.
