He was born in the peaceful village of Piravanoor in Kollam district. Kumaran's parents were farmers.
He was born in December 1922 as the son of Raman and Velumbi. Swami Sankarananda, the then head of the Math, was the guiding spirit of Kumaran who came to Sivagiri at a very young age.

Kumaran reached Sivagiri at the age of 23 and was ordained at the age of 35 by Swami Sankarananda. Intense devotion to Gurudeva was what he held on to till the last moment. In the light of that power, Swami led a selfless

Swami Prakasananda's ancestral house is the Kalatharadi Bhavan in Piravanthoor, which Gurudeva visited many times. When Gurudeva would get there, he would say, "We don't need a bed, just a mat."

Swami Prakashananda led a simple life in the old and new eras. At Sivagiri, Swami Prakasananda used to offer visitors sugar candy and dry grapes. It was another habit that Gurudeva followed.

After his ordination, he travelled from Kanyakumari to Nepal for two years. During this trip he visited all the important holy places in India.

After that he served in Aruvipuram Math and Kunnumpara Math for a long time. No one can forget the services he rendered gently in the devotion of Gurudharma. Swami Prakasananda's had sweated a lot for re-capturing the unclaimed land at Kunnumpara and converting the land into a unique farm and garden.
Swamy was fortunate enough to serve as the General Secretary and President of the Sivagiri Dharmasangham Trust. In 1970, Swami became the General Secretary of the Dharmasangham Trust and held that position for nine years. It was during this period that the Brahma Vidyalaya at Sivagiri, the great concept of Gurudeva, was established. The International Sree Narayana Guru year was organized on the occasion of Gurudeva's 50th Mahasamadhi Day with the aim of spreading Gurudarshan globally during the year 1977 when Swamiji was the General Secretary.

Swamiji who took the vow of silence on December 5, 1983, followed that vow for nine years without a single flaw. In October 1995, Swamy became the first Chairman of the Dharmasangham Trust. Twice he continued as the head for over ten years. The Swamis had gone to Delhi and met Prime Minister Modi and requested for necessary support for the development of Sivagiri. The demise of Swamiji who travelled to the heights of simplicity is reminiscent of great sacrifice.
