THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fourteen more people in the state have been tested positive for Zika virus, a mosquito-borne viral infection. All the 14 are residents coming under the limits of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Majority of them are health workers. A meeting of district medical officers called by the health department following the spread of Zika virus, will be convened soon.

The health department informed that the condition of those diagnosed with the virus is not serious. The virus was first detected in the blood samples of a 24-year-old pregnant woman from Parasala in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday.

The woman tested positive in a test conducted at a lab in Coimbatore. The samples of 19 people including health workers of the hospital where the woman sought treatment have been sent to National Institute of Virology in Pune. Of these, 14 were diagnosed with the disease.

The pregnant woman confirmed of the disease delivered on June 7. The virus is spread through the Aedes species of mosquitoes, which is found in high density across the state. The symptoms of Zika virus include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache. The symptoms will last from two to seven days.
