KOCHI: In yet another incident of dowry harassment, a woman was brutally beaten by her husband and family. The incident took place at Pachalam in Ernakulam. The incident came to light after the woman, named Diana, revealed her bad experiences and lapses from the part of police through the media. Following this, a case was registered against her husband Jipson Peter (31), his father Peter (58), and mother Julie (52) under the Domestic Violence Prohibition Act. Jipson, a software engineer, is in hiding.
Diana revealed that Jipson and his family started torturing her from the third day of the marriage. According to her, Jipson's family tortured her for not giving 50 sovereigns of gold as dowry. Jipson's family even assaulted Diana's father George who came to the house to enquire about the issue. George suffered fractures on his leg and ribs.
Jipson married Diana, a teacher, last April without asking for a dowry. It was their second marriage. Though Diana's family had given more than 50 sovereigns of gold, Jipson said that it was not enough. His family denied her food and her phone was seized.
Even though Diana communicated about the incident to a priest, he discouraged her by reminding her that it was a second marriage. Later, she decided to approach the women's cell of the police as she was unable to bear the torture. Her father arrived at Jipson's house at Pachalam on the 22nd when she was scheduled to attend counseling. On that day, George was brutally attacked by Jipson and his family members. Following this, locals formed a committee and lodged a complaint with the city police commissioner. The police then recorded Diana's statement in detail.
