NEW DELHI: The crime branch turned against Dharmarajan, the main accused in the Suryanelli case, which created a lot of controversy, in the Supreme Court. Crime Branch DySP S Sherif requested the Supreme Court not to grant interim bail or parole to the accused.

Dharmarajan is currently lodged in Poojappura Central Jail, Thiruvananthapuram after convicted. The DySP informed that if he is granted bail, he may go into hiding and threaten the victim in the case. Dharmarajan sought interim bail or parole citing surge in Covid cases in the Poojappura jail.

The DySP informed the apex court that he held talks with Poojappura jail superintendent Nirmalandan on the issue. He said there are 701 inmates in the jail but no surge in Covid cases and no fresh ones were reported in the last two months.

The crime branch told the apex court that the accused had committed gang rape and that he was not eligible for parole as per the rules of the jail. Dharmarajan had earlier gone into hiding during the trial of the case. He has already served 10 years in prison. Dharmarajan demanded bail showing this. The other accused in the case have granted bail earlier.
