KOCHI: The Congress has started an inquiry into the truth behind the incident where the UDF chairperson of Thrikkakara municipality along with 'Onakkodi' (Onam garment) gave Rs 10,000 each to the councilors. The DCC president has been tasked with investigating the incident, which has put the party on the defense. Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that strict action will be taken if it is clear that a crime has been committed. Congress councilors themselves had come forward to demand an inquiry into the incident.

The Onam gift distribution was last day. Chairperson Ajitha Thankappan called the members one by one in the cabin and presented the cover privately. Eighteen councilors who were skeptical about the source of the money returned it and lodged a complaint with the Director of Vigilance seeking an inquiry into the Chairperson’s action. Councilors say they suspect this is commission received through corruption. UDF is ruling the 43 member municipality with the support of four independent councilors.
