NEW DELHI: Renowned playwright Prof. Omchery NN Pillai has won the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2020. He won the award for his autobiography, 'Akasmikam: Omcheryude Ormakkurippukal'. The award carries a prize money of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a certificate.

Omchery, who lives in Delhi, was born in 1924 in Vaikom, Kottayam district. He has received many awards, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. He was the Head of the Malayalam News Division of All India Radio, the Director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, the General Manager in charge of Public Relations at the Food Corporation, the Principal of the Sardar Patel College of Communications, the Adviser to the World Bank and UNESCO, and the Director of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
