KANNUR: From now onwards, parents need not worry about their children climbing trees for their online classes. When Ananthu Babu, a class 11 student from Panniyodu tribal colony, returns home from the hospital, a Wi-Fi network will be available in his area. Ananthu had suffered serious backbone injuries after he fell from a tree in an attempt to get internet access.

The Kannur District Panchayat will soon establish Wi-Fi connections in 110 centers where the network is weak. Kerala Kaumudi had reported yesterday about the plight of children in the Kannavam Chennapoyil tribal colonies who have to climb trees and treehouses for access to the internet.

District Panchayat President PP Divya said that Wi-Fi connections will be provided free of cost in the region for one year in collaboration with Kerala Vision. Rs 30 lakh will be spent in this regard. The project will be expanded by including more private companies with network connections. Assistance will be provided to set up more towers.

The district administration has completed the process of providing connectivity in 20 inland areas. BSNL will provide fiber connections with the help of channel partners and local cable TV operators.
