The worsening infighting in the Congress in Kerala over the new DCC list proves that it is not ready to give up the tradition of cutting the branch on which it is sitting. Leaders who say that any decision taken by the High Command is acceptable and will be humbly accepted have ironically come out publicly against the current DCC leadership change decision. Ordinary party workers are annoyed that there are prominent and popular leaders among the protesters.
Examining the list of new DCC presidents reveals some shortcomings but is totally unacceptable. It is appropriate to see this as a change in the right direction. The new KPCC leadership is trying to make at least a small change in the way things are going on. It is a fact that before the DCC reorganization, the PCC leadership had comprehensive discussions with all the group leaders involved and sought suggestions. Former Chief Minister and AICC General Secretary Oommen Chandy had complained that there was no effective discussion. Opposition leader VD Satheeshan, however, said there had never been such a detailed discussion in the party.
Ramesh Chennithala, another prominent member of the party, is also strongly opposed to the new DCC list. This is nothing new in the organizational history of the party.
The fact is that if you look at the DCC list released by the High Command after detailed discussions, which have been postponed several times, you will not see anything that will make the party tired. All the appointees are qualified and have been working among the people for a long time. Those who can reflect the popular face of the Congress have come to the helm of the DCCs. One notable drawback is that dalits and women are not duly represented in the list. This should be seen as a failure of the leadership.
Leaders need to realize how dangerous it is for their superiors to start abusing one another and fighting in the name of leadership reorganization. In this situation, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan's position that there should not be actions and reactions that take the party to the ventilator is right. This is the way other leaders should think. The party district presidents have received relatively young and vibrant leaders. The new position will definitely inspire them to bring the party closer to more people.
The Congress is often faced with the dilemma of deciding leaders through nominations. Complaints and grievances will end only when a phase of elections at all levels takes place.
