NEW DELHI: Out of the 40 crore unorganized workers in the country, 1.5 crore will be included in the ESI limit in the first phase. These include construction workers, street vendors, domestic workers, milk suppliers, truck drivers, fishing and sales workers, farm workers, and migrant workers. ESI will also be applicable in the plantation sector.
The decision was taken at an ESI plenary board meeting chaired by Union Labour Minister Bhupendra Yadav. One must register on the e-Shram portal of the Ministry of Labour. Since the portal launched on August 26, 2.7 million people have registered.
Aadhaar will be linked to the account at the time of joining ESI. As unorganized workers do not have permanent employers, the committee will be constituted to prepare a report on employer contribution, infrastructure development and benefits. A meeting of state labour ministers will be convened to streamline the work.
Minister of State for Labor Rameshwar Tei also attended the meeting. BMS National Secretary and ESIC Board Member V Radhakrishnan had demanded that the plantation sector be included in the ESI.
And insurance of Rs. 2 lakhs
If the worker dies in an accident or suffers permanent disability, the insurance dependents will get Rs 2 lakh. In case of partial disability, one lakh rupees will be given. The first year premium will be paid by the government
Covid benefit until next June
The scheme in which the Covid-affected ESI worker will receive half of his three-month salary has been extended till June 2022. The minimum attendance to receive the benefit during the Covid period will be reduced from 78 to 39 days

If the ESI hospital does not have in-house facilities, the patient can be transferred to an embalmed private hospital
If the distance to the ESI hospital is more than 10 km, one can go to an empaneled hospital.

The criteria for availing the benefits will be the card received at the time of registration on the e-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in) and the 12 digit number (UAN). Registration is based on Aadhaar, mobile number and bank account details. In cases like Covid, the Central and State Governments can collect information on the portal and carry out welfare and rehabilitation activities.
