IDUKKI: The state water resources department and the Tamil Nadu public works department have issued a letter regarding the Mullaperiyar water level. The letter was issued requesting to open the spillway shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam and release the water in a controlled manner. The water level is likely to rise rapidly during the monsoon. The letter urges to avoid situation where unrestricted quantities of water have to be released.
Meanwhile, the water level in Mullaperiyar rose to 137.45 feet. It rose 0.10 feet high in an hour. The first notice was issued yesterday after the water level crossed 136 feet. A second notice will be given when it reaches 138 feet. The maximum allowable storage capacity is 142 feet. The district administration has said that there is no cause for concern and all necessary steps have been taken to relocate those on the banks of the Periyar if necessary.
