IDUKKI: The water level in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the catchment area of the Mullaperiyar Dam, rose due to heavy rains. With this, seven shutters on the spillway of the dam have been raised and the water has been released. With the shutters open, five Tamil Nadu ministers and three MLAs, including from Theni, will visit the dam tomorrow. Tamil Nadu Irrigation Minister Durai Murugan, Finance Minister Thyagarajan, Co-operation Minister I Periyaswamy, Revenue Minister Murthy, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chakrapani and MLAs will visit the dam.
The current water level in the dam is 138.90 feet. 3900 cubic feet per second of water was released through the Periyar. In five hours of heavy rain, the water level rose by one foot. This is why the shutter was opened. According to the district administration, the water level in the Periyar is high but there is no cause for concern now. Two shutters opened at 6.30pm yesterday, three at 8pm, and two shutters at 12.30pm.
