THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSRTC will launch 6000 buses in the new year to overcome the additional liability due to salary hike. The management estimates that the collection will reach Rs 7 crore even if 5,500 buses are put into service.
At present 3500 - 3600 buses are in service. The management sees the average daily collection at Rs 5 crore as a good indication. An increase in revenue can put an end to the need to depend on the government for salary. Union leaders also pointed out that more buses can bring in more income
250 buses on a rent basis
A tender has been called for hiring private buses on dry lease terms. 250 buses will be launched from next month. If there is a profit in the first phase, more buses will be launched under this provision.
Dry lease
Dry lease is a system of renting a bus without a driver or other staff. A tender has been invited for the provision of dry lease buses for the first super class services and subsequently for the newly started 'gramavandi'. The bus will have the driver and conductor of KSRTC. Fuel costs will be borne by KSRTC. Owners are responsible for repairs, tires, and insurance. Stage carriage permit will be taken by KSRTC. The contract is for 3 years. Opposition groups allege that the vehicles are taken on rent for corruption.

With the implementation of the salary reform, it is estimated that an amount of Rs 103 crore will be required for salaries per month. KSRTC has 26,000 employees. According to the report submitted to the Finance Department, an additional Rs 18 crore is required.
Meanwhile, last month's salary has not yet been disbursed. In addition, the bank consortium was given Rs 14 crore in repayments. The salary can be paid to KSRTC employees only after the government assistance continues for a few more months.
