THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There will be a departmental probe against the police for insulting a Swedish citizen. The investigation has been announced against principal SI Aneesh and civil police officers Sajith and Manish of Kovalam station. The police stopped Steve Asberg, a Swedish native who runs a homestay near Kovalam, while he was returning after buying liquor from an outlet of Bevco.
Three full bottles of liquor were found from his scooter during police checking. The officials asked him to produce the bill of buying liquor. While he did not possess the bill, he insisted that Bevco seals were intact on the bottles. They then asked him to throw the bottles.
Asberg immediately opened the bottles and drained out the liquor in a nearby plot. However, seeing a passer-by capturing the incident in his mobile, the police asked him not to drain out the liquor and told him to bring the bill. He later produced the bill and proved his innocence.
Asberg said he is very sad after police misbehaved with him when he said that there was no bill for alcohol. There have been similar experiences before also. He said that he is running a home stay in Kovalam for the past four years. He said that he produced the bill in the station after draining out the liquor in order to prove his innocence.
Meantime, the police officers association said the officers directed Asberg not to carry alcohol without a bill and not to use alcohol in homestays in connection with New Year.
