THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala reported 49 new cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19 on Wednesday thereby taking the total number of infections in the state to 230, Health Minister Veena George said.

There are 10 cases of Omicron in Thrissur, 8 in Kollam, 7 in Ernakulam, 6 in Malappuram, three each in Alappuzha and Palakkad, two each in Kozhikode and Kasargod, and one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Wayanad.

Seven of the 49 patients came from high-risk countries while 32 reached the state from low-risk countries. 10 persons contracted the new variant through their contacts.

With this, 230 people have tested positive for the Omicron variant in the state. Of the 230 Omicron cases, 59 came from high risk countries, while 141 came from low risk countries and 30 were contacts of primary sources who were positive for Omicron.
