COPENHAGEN: The Covid spread has reached its final stage in Europe, said Hans Kluge, the WHO Europe director. The Omicron variant has moved the Covid-19 pandemic into a new phase and could bring it to an end in Europe. Omicron could infect 60 percent of Europeans by March, he added.
"There will be a global immunity for quite some weeks and months, either thanks to the vaccine or because people have immunity due to the infection, and also lowering seasonality. Covid-19 may come back towards the end of the year, but not necessarily the pandemic", Kluge said.
There has been a fall in the spread of Covid in many parts of America, said Top US scientist Anthony Fauci. Changes have been observed in the Covid spread across the country, he added while cautioning against over confidence. The WHO regional office for Africa said that Covid cases had plummeted in that region and deaths were declining for the first time since the Omicron-dominated fourth wave reached its peak.
Studies have shown that the Omicron variant is more contagious that Delta but generally leads to less severe infections in vaccinated people. World nations are hoping that this could be a sign that the pandemic heading towards its end.
