KOCHI: The High Court has directed the government to take a clear stand on the recommendation of the Justice AV Ramakrishna Pillai Commission to conduct a comprehensive survey to find out the socio-economic status of all communities. Justice PV Kunhikrishnan was hearing a petition filed by NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair seeking quashing of the government's decision to conduct a sample survey to identify the economically backward sections of the society.

The petition was adjourned to May 22 after the government sought ten days to comment. The NSS opposes the practice of selecting and surveying five economically backward households of each ward in the forward sections. The single bench sought the government's position that a comprehensive survey is necessary to find those eligible for economic reservation. The NSS opposed the petition filed by Perumuttam Radhakrishnan, general secretary of the Samastha Nair Samajam, to join as a party.
