THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government on Tuesday responded to the Governor over the controversy regarding the Lokayukta amendment. The government informed the governor that an amendment was being introduced as section 14 of the existing law was unconstitutional. The government, which pointed out that the amendment does not require the approval of the President, has also forwarded the AG's legal advice on the matter to the governor.

Opposition parties had written a complaint to the governor asking him not to sign the ordinance regarding the Lokayukta amendment. The governor had handed over this letter to the government.

According to the opposition, the ordinance was intended to weaken the Lokayukta. The opposition leaders have demanded the governor to send the ordinance for the assent of the President. However, the government has argued that the Lokayukta Act had been amended several times since its enactment in 1999 and therefore it does not require the approval of the President.
