BEIJING: The Winter Olympics which is being held in Beijing, China this year, have been the subject of controversy since the beginning. Most countries usually stay away from mixing politics in sports. This year most countries have banned their athletes from participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics in protest of human rights abuses in China. The IOC, which has always opposed the mixing of politics in the sport, has warned that it could take action, including a ban, against countries that do not participate in the Olympics.

But now the host country, China itself, is mixing politics in the sport. China has included a soldier who was at the forefront of the clashes between Indian troops and the Chinese People's Liberation Army in 2020, as a torchbearer for Winter Olympic Torch Relay. Olympic torch relay is usually attended by athletes and representatives of sports organizations. IOC's approach to China's move to include a soldier as a torchbearer, who was instrumental in initiating the current problems with India, is yet to be known.

Zhi Fabavo, a regimental commander in the People's Liberation Army, was included in China's Winter Olympic Torch Relay. Chinese media reported that Fabavo was seriously injured in a clash with Indian troops. Olympic torch relay, which started on Wednesday, will continue till Friday, till the start of the Winter Olympics
