THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although the government gave an explanation in the Lokayukta Amendment Ordinance two days earlier, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan did not take a decision on Thursday either. The amendment ordinance will come into force only after it is signed by the Governor. The government is also facing difficulties in extending the decision as it has been two weeks since the Cabinet has taken the decision. The governor, who was present at the Raj Bhavan, was unwilling to sign or return the ordinance. There are indications that the governor is likely to take a decision only after the chief minister returns to the capital. The Chief Minister will return from the UAE on Sunday morning.
The cabinet meeting next Wednesday is likely to decide on convening the assembly session. Unless the governor signs the ordinance by then, it will not come into effect. In such a situation, the government can bring the amendment as a bill in the Assembly. But in case the CPI opposes the amendment, a consensus will be needed on the Left Front, without that there will be unrest within the ruling party. The CPM does not want that.
The Opposition is ready for a legal battle, if the amendment is signed by the Governor and then passed in the Assembly.
