KOCHI: Devaswom Minister K Radhakrishnan sought an urgent report from the Cochin Devaswom Board following 'Kerala Kaumudi' news report regarding 'Kalkazhukichoottu' ritual held at Sri Poornathrayesa temple in Tripunithura. The Minister also directed to take necessary steps to avoid such primitive practices which would bring shame to modern Kerala. Minister Radhakrishnan said that steps would be taken to eliminate such primitive practices that exist in the temples under other devaswom boards, which are never acceptable to a civilized society.
'Kerala Kaumudi' published a news report on Friday regarding 'Kalkazhukichoottu' ritual which was being held under the name '12 namaskaram', in which the feet of 12 Brahmins are washed to pardon the sins. The ritual costs Rs 20,000 and they are given food, clothes and money.
The Cochin Devaswom President said that following the minister's order, an inquiry will be held and action will be taken after discussing with those concerned. Other complaints regarding caste discrimination will also be investigated.
Prakash Iyer, president of the Sri Poornathrayesa Temple Advisory Committee, said that the ritual should continue as it is being held inside the temple and also its is a custom continuing for several centuries.
