When the Nightingale of India departs at the age of 92, some things in her life that most people do not know are being discussed. Lata Mangeshkar is the eldest of five children of Deenanath Mangeshkar, a singer, actor and director who had performedg in Marathi theatre for decades, and Shevanti.

She was born on September 28, 1929 at Indore in Madhya Pradesh. She was named Hema Mangeshkar then but later changed that name. Some media reported that her name was changed to Lata Mangeshkar in memory of Deenanath’s daughter Latika from his first wife.

However, others say that she was renamed Lata to commemorate a female character Latika, in one of her father's plays. Her father died when she was 13-years-old. With that, the responsibility of the whole family fell on her shoulders. Master Vinayak, the owner of Navyug Chitrapat movie company and a close friend of the Mangeshkar family helped Lata get started in a career as a singer and actress.
