PARAPPANANGADI: Prominent historian and Kerala Sahitya Akademi award winner Dr. M. Gangadharan (89) has passed away. He died around 5 pm on Tuesday, at his house Kailasam in Parappanangadi .He was born in Neduva, Parappanangadi, Malappuram in 1933, as the son of Dr. PK Narayanan Nair and Muttayil Parukuttyamma. Gangadharan did his schooling in Parappanangadi and Kozhikode and graduated in History from the University of Madras in 1954. He then worked in the Postal Audit Department in Chennai. During this period he wrote articles in Malayalam literary publications. Later he became a history teacher in various colleges.

He started his teaching career in 1970 as a history teacher at Thavanur Rural Institute. In 1976, he became a professor of history at Kozhikode govt college. Retired from here in 1988. He later became a Visiting Professor and Research Coordinator at the MG University School of Letters. He has also worked as a Visiting Caller at Universities in the United States, Japan and Qatar. In 1986, he received his doctorate from the University of Calicut for his research on the Malabar Rebellion. His wife is Yamuna Devi of Chettipady Pattarambil. Children: Unni Narayanan and Nalini (Bangalore). Daughters-in-law: Anitha and Karunakaran. Historian MGS Menon is his nephew. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the residence.
