NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court rejected the plea seeking hearing on the hijab row in the colleges in Karnataka. The high court is already examining the issue. It should be allowed to continue with the hearing and decide it, said SC chief justice N V Ramana, while rejecting the plea. Congress leader and senior advocate Kapil Sibal had asked the court to consider the petition on behalf of Fatima Bushra, a college student, but the court did not accept it.
Fatima Bushra has said in her plea that her fundamental rights have been violated by denying entry into the college. Huge conflicts have erupted in the state as some Hindu students came wearing saffron shawls in protest against college students wearing hijabs.
The Karnataka high court will hear the petition filed by five students, who were not allowed to sit in class wearing hijab, today. Kapil Sibal had asked the court to hear the case in a nine-member Supreme Court bench. "The problem is that schools and colleges are closed. Girls are being stoned. It's spreading across the country”, said Sibal in the court. However, the court rejected the plea stating that if the case is listed for hearing in SC, it cannot be heard in the high court.
