NEW DELHI: Congress is unable to pay rent for the party headquarters and the residence of party president Sonia Gandhi. The last rent paid for the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road was in December 2012. The current rent due is 12.69 lakhs. Sonia Gandhi's official residence also has rent due of 4610 rupees. The rent for the official residence was last paid in September 2020. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has responded to a RTI request by public activist Sujit Patel regarding due rent.
Apart from the party headquarters and the party president's residence, the rent for the bungalow at Chanakyapuri where Sonia Gandhi's personal secretary Vincent George lives has not been paid since August 2013. 5,07,911 rupees is due.
In June 2010, Congress was allotted land on Rose Avenue to build its own headquarters. In 2013, the authorities issued a notice to vacate the building where the current party headquarters is located. But no action was taken as the party seeked more time. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have come out to criticize Sonia Gandhi for not paying rent.
