DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has come forward with a crucial announcement amidst the ongoing discussions on the hijab row in Karnataka. As soon as the new BJP government is formed, a committee will be set up to prepare a draft of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, said the chief minister.

The chief minister’s announcement comes amid the hijab controversy which is gaining national attention. Hindus account for 82 percent of the state’s population. Hints suggest that BJP’s move aims to consolidate the Hindu votes in the state while drawing attention to the hjiab issue.

UCC will provide the same laws regarding marriages, divorce, land-property and inheritance for all people, irrespective of their faith. But, there is confusion regarding its implementation in a single state. That is why, it has been announced that a committee will be set up to prepare a draft.

The committee will comprise of legal experts, retired officials, intellectuals and other stakeholders. This is to keep the culture and heritage of ‘Devabhoomi’, Dhami said. The polling for Uttarakhand assembly elections will take place in a single phase on February 14. In 2017, the BJP had won in 56 out of 70 seats while the Congress bagged only 11 seats.
