THRIKKAKARA: The unidentified dead bodies brought to government hospitals are sold to medical colleges for study purposes, at a heavy price of Rs 40,000. A sum of Rs 9,44,877 has been collected through the sale of an unidentified dead body in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The data is from January 1, 2021 till November 30, 2021.

Most of the unidentified bodies are of men; 55 in number. As per the information document sought by Raju Vazhakala, there are only nine bodies of women.

These are the figures obtained by private medical colleges. The private medical colleges charge Rs 40,000 for a dead body. The responsibility is vested with the DMOE principal.

Money from dead body sale used for maintenance works

A sum of Rs 10,000 obtained through the sale of unidentified bodies is used for maintenance works in mortuary, for buying the chemicals and tools, for arranging cold storage facilities and for buying tools to keep the mortuary clean.
