MAVELIKARA: Mavelikkara MACT court judge Kenneth George has ordered a compensation of Rs 75 lakh to the heirs of Sasikumar, a Malayalam professor at NSS College, Changanassery, who died in an accident caused by private vehicle of then minister Dr M K Muneer. On May 18, 2015, at 11 pm, while Sasikumar's scooter was crossing NH 66 at Kayamkulam Kamalalayam junction, it collided with the minister's vehicle traveling from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode.
The court accepted the HDFC General Insurance Company's disputes that the private vehicle used the 'Kerala State' board and the red beacon light for the minister's journey is in violation of the insurance contract. The court allowed the insurance company to recover the compensation paid to Sasikumar's heirs from the vehicle owner. The court did not accept the insurance company's demand that the state government, which was a party in the case, has to pay compensation as private vehicle was for the government. Advocate Sam Varghese appeared for Sasikumar's heirs and Advocate Oommen Thomas appeared for the insurance company.
